If you’ve ever dreamed of hunting North America’s most iconic big game animal, there’s a good chance you’ve imagined it happening somewhere wild, vast, and unchanged by time. That’s exactly what you’ll find in Gardiner, Montana—home to some of the only legal buffalo (American bison) hunts in the country. At Specimen Creek Outfitters, we guide hunters on these rare opportunities every season, and no matter how many we’ve done, each one still feels like a privilege.
This isn’t your average hunt. And it’s not something you stumble into. It takes planning, a clear understanding of how the tags work, and a deep respect for what you’re walking into.
Montana’s buffalo hunts are tightly regulated, and for good reason. These are free-ranging wild animals, most of which roam out of Yellowstone National Park in the winter. The state of Montana manages the hunt to help control population and disease risks while maintaining healthy herds. The result is a tightly controlled opportunity for hunters who draw a coveted tag.
Hunts take place near Gardiner, on public land just outside the park boundary. The terrain is a mix of rolling sage hills, steep canyons, open flats, and rocky outcroppings. It’s classic bison country—wind-whipped, wide-open, and humbling in scale. You might ride in by horse, glass from ridge tops, or hike into areas the animals have been using, depending on snow levels and herd movement that week.
The animals themselves are no joke. Mature bulls can weigh well over 1,500 pounds. Even cows can top the scale at 1,000. They are incredibly tough, wary, and more agile than most people expect. Despite their size, they move with surprising speed and have keen senses. This is not a tame hunt, and it’s not a guarantee. But if the tag is in your pocket and you're hunting with an experienced guide, you’re in good hands.
One thing to understand about buffalo hunting near Yellowstone: it’s emotional. You’re not just chasing a trophy. You’re taking part in something bigger. These animals have been central to American history, Native culture, and the Western landscape for centuries. Many hunters feel a deep sense of reverence when they finally approach a downed bison. We’ve seen it firsthand—quiet moments, handshakes without words, and the kind of gratitude that stays with you for years.
At Specimen Creek, we handle every part of the hunt with that level of respect. We scout hard ahead of time. We monitor herd movement daily. And we do everything we can to ensure you have a clean, ethical opportunity and that the animal is recovered quickly and handled with care. Field dressing and game retrieval are no small task with an animal this size, but our crew is trained, prepared, and committed to getting the job done right.
It’s worth noting: bison meat is some of the leanest, cleanest protein you can put on your table. Most hunters who take a buffalo home are feeding their family and friends for the better part of a year. We help with the processing logistics and make sure your meat and hide are taken care of from the second we leave the field.
Tag availability for this hunt is extremely limited. If you’re even considering it, start early. We’re happy to walk you through the draw process, explain which units are best, and give you realistic expectations about timing and conditions. Because these hunts depend heavily on migration patterns and weather, we stay flexible and adjust plans accordingly.
We’ve guided seasoned hunters, first-time big game hunters, and clients who’ve waited decades to draw this tag. No matter where you’re coming from, if you’re lucky enough to hold one of these permits, our job is to make sure you walk away with the experience you hoped for—and the kind of story you’ll still be telling years from now.
This isn’t just another hunt. It’s a connection to the land, to history, and to an animal that shaped the continent. And there are only a handful of places left in the world where you can do it like this.
When you're ready, we’ll be here. Boots on the ground, eyes on the herd, and ready to ride.
